JP Mika, 1980

Jean-Paul Nsimba Mika showed an early interest in drawing and ornamentation and later attended the painting department of the Kinshasa Academy of Fine Arts. He also trained at ARAP, the Popular Art Research Studio created by Cheri Cherin, who would become his artistic Master.

At ARAP, Mika refined his skills and eventually became a member of APPO, the Popular Painters Society. In 2004, he founded his own studio, EBA The Fine Arts Events.

Mika is an exceptional draftsman. Early in his career, he borrowed themes and compositions from his elders, especially his mentor Cheri Cherin. Like Cheri Samba before him, Mika often stages himself within his works painting self-portraits or inserting himself into group scenes, frequently dressed as a *sapeur* (a member of the flamboyantly elegant Congolese fashion movement).

In recent years, Mika has developed a distinctive personal style focused on portraiture. He simplifies his compositions by using vibrant patterned fabrics as backgrounds a signature visual device that infuses his paintings with energy and emotional warmth. His highly realistic works remain benevolent in tone, portraying a modern, dynamic, joyful Africa with kindness and optimism.
